How can I tell if I have a smart meter?

For some of the services we provide and the features we offer, a smart meter is required. But how do you know if you already have one? In this FAQ, we explain what a smart meter is and how you can easily check whether you have one installed at home.

1. What is a smart meter?
A smart meter is a digital gas and electricity meter that can be read remotely by your network operator. This means you no longer need to submit meter readings manually.

2. How do I know if I have a smart meter?
There are a few ways to check:

  • Digital display: A smart meter has a digital screen instead of a traditional rotating disk or mechanical counter.

  • Brand and model indication: Smart meters are often supplied by manufacturers such as Landis+Gyr, Iskra, Kaifa, or Sagemcom. The meter usually displays "smart meter" or a type designation like DSMR 4 or 5.

  • Communication module: Smart meters have a built-in communication module and an external (P1) port that allows you to connect devices like an energy usage monitor.

  • Installation year: Was your meter installed after 2012? If so, there’s a good chance it’s a smart meter.

  • Your energy supplier or network operator: They can tell you exactly whether you have a smart meter and whether it’s active. Don’t know who your network operator is? You can check via this link.

3. Can I check online?
Yes, through the customer portal of your energy supplier or network operator, you can often see what type of meter you have and whether it’s a smart meter.

4. What if I don’t have a smart meter yet?
You can contact your network operator to ask about installation options. In the Netherlands, smart meters are now offered as the standard.
