What is load balancing?
Load balancing - also called smart charging - ensures that your charge post works together with the smart meter in your home. This way, the charging station knows exactly how much power is available, and prevents your main fuse from overloading.
Why is this important?
Most houses have a main fuse of 1 or 3 phases of 25 amps. An electric car can charge up to 16 amps on 3 phases. Without smart charging, you would then be almost unable to use other appliances at home without the fuses flying out - or worse.
With smart charging, the charging station automatically adjusts the charging power.
Example:
Are you using only 9 amps per phase at home? Then the car will charge at full power 16A in most cases. Does the consumption in the house go up, e.g. to 15 amps? Then the charging station temporarily lowers the charging capacity, e.g. to 10 amps. As soon as there is room again, it automatically switches back up.
This way you charge safely and as quickly as possible.
If you have a connection to the smart meter and are still only charging your car at a lower capacity than you think is possible (e.g. 6 amps), click here.
